Sacro’s Awareness Programmes seek to engage young people in discussions to increase their awareness of their actions, the choices leading to, and the implications of their offending.
Some people harmed by an offence do not want any contact with the young person. Likewise, there may be young persons who cannot or do not want to meet the person they harmed. In these cases, Sacro Youth Justice Services offer a series of Awareness Programmes. These programmes engage the young person in discussions aimed at increasing their awareness of their own choices and actions as well as the effects of their behaviour on others.
The programmes involve a learning style aimed at working collaboratively with the young person and are designed to enhance the development of mutual respect and self-esteem. The programmes may also involve group-work sessions when several young people have been involved in an incident.
Short-term, Cognitive Behaviour Programmes are provided for medium-risk offenders as well as longer-term, Personal Change Programmes aimed at high-risk or persistent offenders.
The service is provided for young people between the ages of 8 and 17.
The service works with young people who have been charged by the police or who have come to the notice of anti-social behaviour agencies in their area. The police cases are reported to the Children’s Reporter, or are passed to a multi-agency group. In line with the Scottish Government’s Getting it Right for Every Child policy, the service can accept cases as an alternative to, or from, a Children’s Hearing as well as from anti-social behaviour teams, social workers, schools, Procurators Fiscal or any other multi-agency group.
