Caledonia Youth Offenders’ Project

Caledonia Youth provide relationships and sexual health education, information, advice and support to anyone recently released from prison.

What does the service offer?

Caledonia Youth offers a confidential, tailor-made service to help people develop the skills and knowledge to make informed choices about their personal relationships and sexual health. We work with each individual to identify areas they require support and information around, these can include:

  • Developing and maintaining healthy relationships
  • Identifying and reducing risk-taking behaviour
  • Developing negotiation and assertiveness skills
  • Self-esteem, managing feelings and body image
  • Sexually transmitted infections, condoms and contraception
  • Reproduction, pregnancy and parenthood
  • Sexuality and Gender Issues.

How does the service work?

Individuals can access the service during their sentence or following liberation. Caledonia Youth will initially meet with a person to identify their needs and to develop a programme. Each week the Caledonia Youth worker will meet with the individual; using a range of specially developed resources and activities we will explore the areas they have identified. Throughout their contact Caledonia Youth will consult with their client to ensure the programme is meeting their needs; we will provide information and advice about other agencies and services that they may find beneficial and we will make referrals when required.

Who is the service aimed at?

The service is aimed at anyone aged up to 25 serving a custodial sentence, those on remand and those recently liberated. The service is aims to help anyone who has relationship issues or concerns about their sexual health. We can also offer support and training to parents and carers to help them feel more confident supporting their children with relationships and sexual health issues.

How is the service accessed?

Referrals can be made by booking an appointment through the Community Links Centre; individuals can self-refer or ask another agency or worked to refer them. Services can also be accessed in HMP Edinburgh, HMP and YOI Cornton Vale, HMP Greenock and HMYOI Polmont.
