The Scottish Community Mediation Centre (formerly Community Mediation Consultancy and Training Service) has been based in Edinburgh since 1999. The Centre is an initiative by Sacro and the Scottish Government to assist social housing providers in developing the provision of mediation across Scotland. Most services offered under this initiative are free to local authorities and housing associations/co-ops.
Funded by the Scottish Government's Housing Division, the Centre aims to encourage the growth of mediation services and promote good standards.
The Centre offers:
- Assistance to individual local authorities in identifying appropriate models and levels of delivery for community mediation in their area.
- Assistance in establishing procedures, service standards and quality control measures.
- Provision of training in mediation awareness and mediation skills for local authority and housing association staff.
- Production of a series of ‘good practice’ manuals and briefing papers on a range of issues relating to community mediation services (e.g. “Ensuring Good Practice”, “Measuring Service Performance”). A full list of titles and information on how to order is available from our publications page.
The Centre has assisted most Scottish local authorities in planning and developing mediation services. It provides regular training, advice and assistance, and a range of consultancy reports and is able to provide individual support to authorities and mediation services. It also provides constructive conflict resolution training for other local authority staff such as community wardens, housing officers and police.
