The Sacro Lecture 2009: A Steep Learning Curve: My Introduction to Scottish Prisons
Monday 23 November 2009 Playfair Library, Old College, South Bridge, University of Edinburgh
Speaker: Hugh Monro CBE, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons in Scotland Chair: Kenny MacAskill MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Justice
Brigadier Hugh Monro CBE took up the role of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons in Scotland in June this year.
Hugh Monro served in the British Army for 36 years. He was commissioned to the Queen’s Own Highlanders in 1972 and retired as a Brigadier in 2008. His final post was as the Deputy Commanding General of the Multi National Security Transition Command – Iraq, based in Baghdad during 2006 and 2007 where he was responsible for helping to train and equip the Iraqi Army and Police.
In his lecture, Hugh Monro focusses on many of the challenges and issues faced by Scotland’s prisons as well as in the wider community. He also provides a fascinating insight into how he feels many of these issues might be addressed by drawing on some of the experiences he has gained by serving in the armed forces.
The entire transcript of the lecture is available here and Sacro is grateful to Hugh Monro for making this available.
