Sacro’s Face-to-face Meetings facilitate dialogue between a young person and the person they have harmed to actively address the harm caused by an offence.
The service is similar to Restorative Justice Conferencing but is held between the young person and the person harmed only.
Young people are encouraged to understand the consequences of their offending from the perspective of the person harmed, accept responsibility, offer an apology and make amends as best they can.
Those affected by the crime can meet the young person, express their feelings about the offence and its impact upon them, hear an apology, and have a say in what the young person can do to make amends and prevent re-offending.
A meeting is held between the parties involved and is convened by one or two facilitators in a safe and structured manner.
An ‘Action Plan’ is drawn up which both parties agree to and sign. This specifies how the young person will make amends and take steps to prevent re-offending. A final report is then sent to the Reporter/Procurator Fiscal.
The Service works with anyone who has been harmed or affected by the offending or anti-social behaviour of young people between 8 and 17.
The service works with young people who have been charged by the police or who have come to the notice of anti-social behaviour agencies in their area. The police cases are reported to the Children’s Reporter, or are passed to a multi-agency group. In line with the Scottish Government’s Getting it Right for Every Child policy, the service can accept cases as an alternative to, or from, a Children’s Hearing as well as from anti-social behaviour teams, social workers, schools, Procurators Fiscal or any other multi-agency group.
