Sacro’s Restorative Justice Conferencing enables young people, their families and the people harmed to actively participate in the process of addressing the harm caused by an offence.
Young people are encouraged to understand the consequences of their offending from the perspective of the person harmed, accept responsibility, offer an apology and make amends as best they can. Families are given a principal role, encouraged to take more responsibility for their children’s behaviour and improve their relationship with them. Those affected by the offence can meet the young person, express their feelings about the offence and its impact upon them, hear an apology, and have a say in what the young person can do to make amends and prevent re-offending.
A meeting is held for all those directly affected by an offence, including support people. The meeting is convened by two facilitators in a safe and structured manner.
An ‘Action Plan’ is drawn up which every participant agrees to and signs. This specifies how the young person will make amends and take steps to prevent re-offending. A final report is then sent to the Reporter/Procurator Fiscal.
The service works with anyone who has been harmed or affected by the offending or anti-social behaviour of young people between 8 and 17.
The service works with young people who have been charged by the police or who have come to the notice of anti-social behaviour agencies in their area. The police cases are reported to the Children’s Reporter, or are passed to a multi-agency group. In line with the Scottish Government’s Getting it Right for Every Child policy, the service can accept cases as an alternative to, or from, a Children’s Hearing as well as from anti-social behaviour teams, social workers, schools, Procurators Fiscal or any other multi-agency group.
