Sacro’s Shuttle Dialogue Service facilitates contact between a young person and the person they have harmed to actively address the harm caused by an offence.
The service offers a restorative justice service between a young person and the person harmed by an offence. It differs from other youth justice services in that it takes place without a direct meeting between the parties. This may be because either one of the participants do not want to meet directly or there may be other reasons why a meeting is inappropriate e.g. limited understanding of the process or inability to communicate effectively. Other circumstances such as location or commitments may also make it impractical for them to meet in person.
Shuttle Dialogue is valuable in that it facilitates some form of contact or exchange of information which is beneficial to both parties in addressing the harm caused by an offence.
A facilitator will act as a go-between for the person harmed and the young person as they negotiate their need for answers, understanding, and where appropriate, reparation.
The service works with anyone who has been harmed or affected by the offending or anti-social behaviour of young people between 8 and 17.
The service works with young people who have been charged by the police or who have come to the notice of anti-social behaviour agencies in their area. The police cases are reported to the Children’s Reporter, or are passed to a multi-agency group. In line with the Scottish Government’s Getting it Right for Every Child policy, the service can accept cases as an alternative to, or from, a Children’s Hearing as well as from anti-social behaviour teams, social workers, schools, Procurators Fiscal or any other multi-agency group.
