The Streetwise road safety education programme for schools works to improve the knowledge of young people in relation to responsible road use.
The service offers a proactive educational programme aimed at encouraging young people to be responsible and aware of their responsibilities when they find themselves in charge of a motor vehicle.
The programme aims to reduce the levels of alcohol-related driving offences by raising awareness of the consequences of drink and driving among young drivers.
The programme is delivered in schools over three sessions lasting approximately three hours in total. Times and dates for programme delivery are kept flexible in order to facilitate its accommodation into school timetables.
The presentation is intended to be as interactive as possible and involves group discussions, quizzes, overhead projector slides, videos, debates and games. On completion of the programme, participants are given handouts and literature which review and expand on the course.
The programme is aimed at older school children, usually at S4 stage. This group is targeted in an attempt to pass on the safety message before bad driving habits can become established.
Schools should approach Sacro directly regarding the service.
