Restorative Justice in Scotland

Sacro has been providing services based on restorative practices in Scotland for over 30 years. Over time we have seen the practice evolve from the fledgling “Mediation and Reparation” services of the 1980s to the fully-developed and highly-regarded Restorative Justice (RJ) services we see today.

Arun Gandhi delivers the 2015 Sacro Lecture

Sacro was delighted and honoured to have Arun Gandhi deliver the 2015 Sacro Lecture.

Arun Gandhi is the fifth grandson of India’s legendary leader, Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi. Arun's grandfather taught him to understand nonviolence through understanding violence. “If we know how much passive violence we perpetrate against one another we will understand why there is so much physical violence plaguing societies and the world,” Gandhi said. Through daily lessons, Arun says, he learned about violence and about anger.

It follows a survey that suggests the offence is accepted by a significant number of families in Edinburgh's black and ethnic minority communities. The support project was set up by Sacro, Edinburgh and Lothians Regional Equality Council and the charity Multi-Cultural Family Base, following consultation with Police Scotland

So-called honour crime is when a family member abuses a relative they believe has shamed the family or community.

Youth Restorative Conference

Sacro are pleased to take the opportunity of International Restorative Justice week to highlight services. Sacro has been at the forefront of developing restorative practices across Scotland since the 1980’s and currently provide services across many areas in Scotland for adults and young people.

Restorative Justice provides opportunities for those harmed by offences and those responsible for the harm to take part in a safe process, where they can communicate about what happened and how amends might be made for the harm caused.
