New funding for Sacro services
Through its Tampon Tax Fund, the UK Government has awarded a grant to the Bright Choices project. Edinburgh-based Bright Choices is a Lottery-funded project, led by Sacro in partnership with the Edinburgh and Lothian Regional Equality Council and the Multi-Cultural Family Base. The service provides a range of services to individuals and families who are affected by Honour Abuse and Honour-Based Violence (HBV). The award will fund a worker for three years to provide support to women who have been victims of female genital mutilation (FGM). The role will also undertake education and outreach work to raise awareness of FGM and the hazards to health associated with the unnecessary and dangerous practice.
Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, Ben Gummer MP visited Sacro’s national office in Edinburgh to meet the Bright Choices staff and discuss the work of the service at first hand.
Sacro has also received funding from the Scottish Veterans Fund to support the work of its national Veterans Mentoring Service. Sacro's Veterans Mentoring Service is a service for military veterans who are currently in or are on the periphery of the criminal justice system. The service works closely with the veteran to put an intensive support plan in place where strategies can be developed to cope with their specific needs. The aim of the service is to enable the service user to enjoy sustainable, independent living. Established in 2008, the Scottish Veterans Fund has invested £1.129 million to 134 projects. The funding allocation was awarded following consideration by the new Scottish Veterans Fund panel chaired by the Scottish Veterans Commissioner.
The Scottish Government has also agreed to a further year's funding for the Shine Women's Mentoring Service. Shine is provided as a public social partnership (PSP); a strategic partnership between public and voluntary sector organisations. Sacro is the lead delivery partner and works with seven other voluntary sector agencies: Access to Industry, Apex Scotland, Barnardos, Circle Scotland, Turning Point Scotland, Venture Trust and The Wise Group.
