Volunteering with Sacro
Sacro's Travel Service aims to provide a regular transport service to many of Scotland’s prisons and the State Hospital at Carstairs. The service enables prisoners to maintain important contact with their families and friends. This contact helps to sustain family relationships and facilitate the prisoners’ re-integration to the community on release.
The Travel Service could not be successfully delivered without the dedication and skills of its volunteers. During the period between September 2012 and August 2013 the six volunteers who help to deliver the Edinburgh Travel Service drove over 28,000 miles to enable families to see their loved ones.
Gus Napier, a retired airline pilot, has been volunteering with the Edinburgh Travel Service for two years. In the last year Gus has volunteered in driving 136 trips across Scotland. Gus said: “You get to know the people who use the service, and they are always appreciative of what the drivers do”.
The Travel Service regularly receives positive feedback. A service user visiting HMP Glenochil recently said: “If it wasn’t for the help I get from Sacro I would never manage, by myself, to get to the prison to see my son, face to face. For the Service and for the drivers, I can’t thank you enough”.
Sacro’s Edinburgh Travel Service is currently looking for friendly, non-judgemental and punctual drivers to volunteer with the service.
