We are inviting people with lived experience of the justice system to take part in small, informal group discussions this August. What you share will help shape the work of the Sentencing and Penal Policy Commission, which is looking at how prison and community sentences are used in Scotland.

We want to hear from you if you have experience of:

  • community sentencing
  • bail or remand or,
  • being in prison

Community sentences can include things like unpaid work, regular appointments with a justice worker, wearing an electronic tag, attending programmes, or following other conditions set by the court.

These group discussions will be safe, supportive and led by people who understand how complex these experiences can be. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance, we’re interested in what matters most to you.

In-person sessions will be held in Glasgow and Dundee, as will two online options. All participants will receive a small shopping voucher for taking part.

Although we fully understand the need for Emergency Early Release, Upside's ability to prepare and engage with those being released has been significantly curtailed by the compressed timescales and volume of people involved.

Remembrance

As we approach Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country. Their courage, sacrifice and dedication will never be forgotten. We must also remember the families of the brave, who have equally sacrificed, saying goodbye to their loved ones who never got to return, and for those who did but life suddenly felt very different.
